Mercado Bio is in Madalena, close enough to the ferry terminal to reach on foot. On an island where almost everything needs a car, that is the single most useful thing about it: it is a realistic option for a day trip over from Horta with no vehicle.

## About

Mercado Bio sits in the centre of [Madalena](/villages/madalena), a short walk from where the
ferry from Horta berths.

That location does most of the work. Pico is an island where
[renting a car](/getting-here/car-rental) is effectively compulsory, and Madalena is the one town
compact enough to spend a day in without one. If you have crossed the channel for the day, your
realistic radius is the few hundred metres around the terminal, and this is inside it.

The rest of that radius is unusually good for a town this size. The island cooperative
[Picowines](/wine/picowines) is on the northern edge, the whale watching and diving operator
[CW Azores](/whale-watching/cw-azores) is on the quay itself, and the
[UNESCO vineyard landscape](/wine/unesco-vineyard-landscape) starts just outside the town. A
car-free day here is a real day, not a compromise, and lunch is the part people forget to plan.

Check the return ferry before you order. See [eating on Pico](/eat) for island-wide opening
patterns and [getting to Pico](/getting-here) for the crossing.
