How we verify

One rule

Never publish a figure that has not been sourced.

Every number on this site, a price, a distance, an altitude, a phone number, a set of coordinates, carries the primary source it came from and the date somebody checked it. You can see them: they are the "source" links beside each fact.

Where a figure cannot be sourced, it is left out. Not estimated, not carried over from another guide, not rounded from memory. That is why pages here say things like "no opening hours" in places where other guides give you a number. The number those guides give you is often right. The point is that we cannot show you why it is right, so we do not print it.

What "last verified" means

The date at the top of a page is the day a person checked that page's facts against their sources. It is not the day the page was edited, not the day a script ran, and not the day the site was deployed. No automated job can move it.

When a page goes past its review interval, the stamp turns amber on its own rather than quietly staying green. An ageing date is honest. A refreshed one that nobody earned is not.

Two kinds of page

Verified pages are the ones offered to search engines and answer engines. They have to clear every check in the build before they can carry that status.

Outlines are pages that exist so the site's structure has no gaps, but which have not been researched yet. They are readable and linked, and they are marked noindex and kept out of the sitemap, llms.txt and llms-full.txt. You will land on one occasionally by following a link. It will say what it does not yet know.

When a source cannot be reached

Sometimes the authority for a figure is unreachable: a government site that blocks automated requests, or a domain that has stopped resolving. Several pages here say exactly that, by name, and leave the figure out.

That is deliberate. See climbing Montanha do Pico, which does not state the permit cap, and the whale season calendar, which carries a warning that its monthly figures are an unsourced placeholder and is kept out of the sitemap because of it.
