Renting a car on Pico

You will need one

Pico covers 447 square kilometres and holds under 14,000 people, spread thinly along two coasts. The roads along each are slow, and there is no bus network worth building a plan around. Everything this site describes, the mountain, the wine country, the south-coast whale boats, sits at a different point on a long island.

A visitor without a car is effectively restricted to Madalena, which is the one town compact enough to work on foot. That is a perfectly good day trip from Horta. It is not a week.

Where the desks are

Rental operations cluster in two places: Madalena, within a few hundred metres of the ferry terminal, and the airport on the north coast. There are a small number elsewhere, including at Lajes on the south coast, but the two clusters are where the choice is.

That geography matters for the ferry arrival. If you are crossing from Horta, your car needs to be waiting in Madalena, not at the airport on the other coast. See ferries to Pico for which Pico port your sailing uses.

Book before you fly

This is the single most repeated piece of advice about Pico and it is repeated because it is true: the island's fleet is finite, summer demand exceeds it, and arriving without a booking in August is how people end up stuck in one town. Book it with the flights, not on arrival.
