Pico's vineyards are a UNESCO World Heritage landscape: currais, small stone-walled plots protecting Verdelho vines from salt wind, mostly in Criação Velha and the Lajido of Santa Luzia.
The black basalt walls aren't decorative: they're the only reason vines survive the Atlantic wind here at all.
