The Museu dos Baleeiros occupies the old boat sheds on Rua dos Baleeiros, the street running down to the harbour at Lajes do Pico. The building is part of the exhibit: these are the sheds the harpoon boats were kept in, on the slipway they launched from.

It is one site of the regional Museu do Pico, which is spread across the island rather than held in one building. The whaling story it tells is the open-boat, shore-based kind: lookouts on the hillside spotting a blow, boats launched on the shout, and a pursuit under oar and sail. That is a different industry from factory whaling, and the distinction is the reason the museum exists here rather than as a general maritime collection.

Reading it before or after a boat trip changes the trip. Espaço Talassa sails from the same harbour, and the lookout system that once found whales for the harpoon crews is the ancestor of the one that finds them for the watching boats today. The rules those boats now work to are on the whale watching hub.

It is also, with the Gruta das Torres, one of the two things on the island that reliably works in bad weather.
