Czar Winery, São Roque do Pico

Czar Winery is an adega at São Roque do Pico on the island's north coast. Its name points at the history that makes Pico wine interesting: the island's wine once travelled as far as the Russian imperial court, long before the landscape it grows in was a World Heritage site.

About

Czar Winery sits at São Roque do Pico, on the island's north coast, which makes it the natural stop for anyone based at São Roque rather than Madalena.

The name is the interesting part. Pico's wine economy was not a local affair: the island's Verdelho travelled, and the reputation it earned abroad is the reason the walled vineyard landscape exists at the scale it does rather than as a few sheltered plots. Phylloxera and emigration in the nineteenth century took most of that cultivated area out of use, and much of what you see on the north coast today is wall that outlived its vine. A winery choosing that name is pointing at the part of the story the walls cannot tell you on their own.

Like Picowines and the Azores Wine Company, visits are best arranged in advance rather than assumed.

What this page does not tell you

No prices, no tasting formats, no opening hours, no wines, no vintages, and nothing about the export history beyond the outline above, which is context rather than a sourced claim about this producer. The location, phone and website come from OpenStreetMap, cited in full above; confirm them with the winery before making a special trip along the north coast.
