Best for Seeing a modern winery working inside the walled-plot landscape.
The Azores Wine Company's Pico adega stands on the north-west coast, on Rua do Poço Velho, set among the walled plots rather than in a village. That siting is the point of visiting it. The UNESCO vineyard landscape is usually described as a heritage object, something preserved; here it is a working input to a modern winery, and the contrast between the hand-built basalt walls outside and the equipment inside is the clearest statement on the island of what the revival actually means.
It is the furthest of the three adegas covered here from Madalena, and the drive out along the coast is part of the experience: you pass through the currais to reach it.
Visits are by appointment. As with Picowines in Madalena and Czar Winery at São Roque, turning up without booking is how people end up looking at a closed door, particularly outside high season.
