The plateau lake

Lagoa do Capitão sits at 38.4875° N, 28.3186° W, on the interior plateau in São Roque do Pico municipality. It is a small, shallow lake in grazing country, and the reason people stop is what is behind it: the cone of Montanha do Pico rising straight out of the plateau.

That is also the catch. The view everyone comes for needs the mountain to be out of cloud, and the mountain makes its own cloud. On a bad day you are looking at a pond in a field.

Managing the expectation

Treat it as a stop on the way across the island rather than a destination you drive out to. The road over the middle connects the north and south coasts anyway, so the cost of including it is small, and the cost of making a dedicated trip in poor visibility is a wasted afternoon.

If the cloud is down, the two weather-proof options are the Gruta das Torres and the Museu dos Baleeiros. If it is clear, the natural pools are the better use of a good day.

Cattle graze the plateau and the ground around the lake is often wet. Ordinary care applies: shut gates, keep off the soft margins, and do not expect a surfaced path.

One more caution about the drive: the road that reaches this plateau is the one that climbs into the island's own cloud, and it can be clear at the coast and thick here. If you are crossing anyway the stop costs nothing, which is exactly why it is worth treating as opportunistic rather than planned.
