What is a sensible three-day itinerary for Pico?

Three days works if you accept that one of them belongs to the weather. Put the two weather-dependent things, the summit and a boat, on the first two mornings so a cancellation has somewhere to move to, and keep the wine country and the caves as the flexible day.
The principle
Do not plan three days on Pico as a fixed sequence. Plan them as two weather-dependent objectives and one flexible day, and decide the order each morning.
The two weather-dependent things are Montanha do Pico and a whale watching boat. Both can be cancelled by conditions, and both are the reason people come.
The shape
Day one, whichever is possible. Look at the mountain. If it is clear and you have registered, climb. If it is in cloud, take the boat instead. Do not hold the "planned" order.
Day two, the other one. Same rule.
Day three, the flexible day. The wine country walked rather than driven, plus the Gruta das Torres, which works in any weather. If day one or two was lost, this is where it moves to.
Where to sleep for three days
