What is eating out on Pico actually like, and when are places open?
Quick answer
Eating on Pico runs on the season and on the size of the island. Madalena and Lajes have the most choice, many places close one day a week, and Sunday evening is the thinnest slot of the week outside July and August. Booking matters more than it looks like it should.

The shape of it
Under 14,000 people live on Pico, spread along 447 square kilometres of coast. Restaurants follow the population, so the choice is in Madalena and Lajes do Pico, with good individual places scattered along both coasts between them and very little in the middle.
What visitors underestimate is the effect of that scatter combined with driving on Pico. A restaurant twenty kilometres away on the other coast is not a casual decision at nine at night.
Opening patterns
Three patterns catch people out, and none is unusual for a small island.
A weekly closing day. Most places take one, and it is not always the same day.
Sunday evening. The thinnest slot of the week outside high summer. Plan around it rather than discovering it. See what is open on a Sunday.
The season. Out of season, fewer places open and those that do keep shorter hours. A list of restaurants compiled in August describes a different island from the one you visit in February.
Booking
Book, even where it feels unnecessary. Dining rooms here are small, the good ones fill, and the alternative is a drive. This applies doubly if you are a group, and doubly again in August.
