Fonte Tavern is in Lajes do Pico, the old whaling town on the south coast. Its usefulness is mostly geographic: it is inside the small part of Lajes you will already be walking around if you have come here for the day.
The Museu dos Baleeiros is on the harbour street, and Espaço Talassa sails from the same harbour. A morning boat, the museum afterwards, and lunch without moving the car is a genuinely well-shaped day, and this is the part of it that is easy to arrange badly.
Lajes is small. That is its charm and its constraint: there is not a long list of alternatives within walking distance if you arrive somewhere at the wrong moment and find it full. Book.
