Lajes do Pico is the town on the island's south coast and the municipality that covers the largest area of the three. It was the centre of the island's whaling industry, it holds the whalers' museum, and the south-coast whale watching boats sail from its harbour.
The whaling town
Lajes do Pico is the largest of the three municipalities by area and the town on the south coast. Its history is whaling, and unlike most places that say so, the evidence is still standing: the boat sheds, the harbour they launched from, and the Museu dos Baleeiros on Rua dos Baleeiros.
The two census figures above are worth reading together. The municipality holds 4,711 people across 155 square kilometres, but the town parish itself held 1,726 at the 2021 census. Lajes is a small town administering a large, thinly populated stretch of the south coast.
Whales, then and now
The same street that holds the museum holds Espaço Talassa, which runs whale watching boats from the harbour. That continuity is the reason to come here rather than sail from the other coast: the lookout culture that once found sperm whales for the harpoon boats is the same culture that finds them for the watching boats, and the museum explains the first half of it.

Using it as a base
Lajes suits a visit built around whales and whaling history. It is the furthest of the three towns from the Faial ferry at Madalena, so a day trip from Horta that also takes in Lajes is a long day with a lot of driving in it. São Roque do Pico on the north coast is the shorter drive from the ferry, and Santa Luzia along that same coast is where the vineyard walls run down to the water. One practical warning that applies to any south-coast base: there is no useful bus network on the island, and the road between the coasts is slow. Budget the driving honestly before you book here, especially if your flights or ferries run from the other side.

Museum opening hours and admission are absent: the regional museums site was unreachable at the time of writing and nothing here is guessed from secondary guides. Boat departure times, prices and seasons are equally absent, for the same reason.
