How many days should I spend on Pico?
Quick answer
Four full days is the honest minimum if you want the mountain and the sea. One day for the summit, one for a boat, one for the wine country and the caves, and one spare for the weather. Two days is a taste. A week is comfortable rather than excessive.
The short answer
Four full days, not counting travel. That is the number at which a normal trip stops being a sequence of compromises.
What each day is for
One for the mountain. Montanha do Pico is 2,351 metres and the ascent is a sustained scramble. It takes the day and it takes something out of the next one.
One at sea. Whale watching is a morning, but it is a morning that has to be the right morning.
One for the wine country and the caves. The UNESCO vineyard landscape walked rather than driven, plus the Gruta das Torres.
One spare. This is the day that decides whether the trip works.
Why the spare day is not optional
The mountain and the boats are both weather-dependent, and the weather here changes inside a morning. A four-day trip with no slack is a three-day trip plus a gamble on which of your two main objectives gets cancelled.
With a spare day, a bad Tuesday becomes a rescheduled Wednesday. Without one it becomes the thing you tell people about afterwards.
Shorter and longer
Two days is a taste: one boat, one walk through the currais, no summit. That is a reasonable way to see Pico as part of a wider Azores trip, and it is what most people crossing from Horta actually do.
