Do you need a car on Pico?

Quick answer

For almost every trip, yes. Pico covers 447 square kilometres with 13,834 people spread along two coasts, there is no bus network worth planning around, and the mountain, the vineyards and the whale boats are far apart. The exception is a day trip from Horta that stays in Madalena, which works on foot.

Why the answer is yes

Pico is a long island with a 2,351 metre mountain in the middle. The roads follow the two coasts, with one road across the middle that climbs into cloud. The things people come for sit at different points on that map: the summit in the centre, the vineyards on the west and north coasts, and the whale boats on the south coast. There is no bus network that joins them up in a way you can plan a day around.

Many places to stay are also small rural properties outside the towns, so even dinner can mean a drive. See where to stay.

The one exception

If you cross from Horta for a single day and stay in Madalena, you can manage on foot. Madalena is compact, the ferry lands in the middle of it, and the vineyard landscape starts at its edge. That is a good day out. It is not a holiday. See the day trip from Faial.

What would change the answer

Nothing on the island side changes it. What changes is how early you book. The rental fleet is finite and runs out in summer, so book the car with the flights. See renting a car on Pico for where the desks are.

What this page does not tell you

No drive times and no distances. None has been measured, so none is stated. Read the full guide to driving on Pico for what the roads are like.
