Villa da Madalena, Madalena

Villa da Madalena is in the centre of Madalena, within walking distance of the ferry terminal. On an island where a car is close to compulsory, staying in town is the one arrangement that works without one, which makes it the natural first or last night of a trip.

About

Villa da Madalena is in Madalena itself, close enough to the terminal to reach on foot with luggage.

That is worth more on Pico than it would be elsewhere. This is the only town on the island compact enough to function without a car, and the walkable radius around the terminal is unusually rewarding for somewhere this small: the island cooperative Picowines on the northern edge, the whale watching and diving operator CW Azores on the quay, and the vineyard landscape beginning just outside town.

The obvious use is the ends of a trip. A first night here before collecting a car, or a last night before an early crossing to Horta, removes the two moments when a rural base on the far coast is most awkward. See getting to Pico for the crossing and where to stay for the alternatives on the other coasts.

The trade is the ordinary one for staying in town: you are in the busiest place on the island, not among the currais. Pocinho Bay down the coast is the other side of that choice.
