hotel · Lajes do Pico
Aldeia da Fonte is a stone-built hotel on Pico's south coast, west of Lajes do Pico, set in mature garden ground running down towards the sea. It is the most substantial place to stay on that coast and the practical base for whale watching from the south side.

Best for A south-coast base for whale watching, without staying in the town itself.
Aldeia da Fonte sits on the south coast between Lajes do Pico and the road west, in grounds that have been planted long enough to feel like woodland rather than a hotel garden. The buildings are basalt, which on this island is less a design choice than the only stone there is.
Its usefulness is position. The south coast is where the whaling history is and where the south-side boats sail from, and there is not a great deal of accommodation along it. Staying here puts Espaço Talassa and the Museu dos Baleeiros within a short drive rather than across the island.
The trade is distance from the ferry. Madalena and the crossing to Horta are the length of the island away, so this is the wrong base if you plan to hop back and forth to Faial. It is the right one if your days are built around the water on this side. See where to stay for the comparison and driving on Pico for what the distances really cost.
